Colombian President Warns 'I Shall Resort to Weapons Again' if United States Invades.

Donald Trump and his Colombian counterpart have escalated the tone in their verbal conflict, increasing strains bilaterally after American military units targeted Venezuela with the aim of deposing Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro from office.

"He has drug factories and production sites and is not going to be doing it very long," Trump added.

Rising Threats coupled with Accusations

Talking to the press on Sunday, Trump hinted at similar use of force against Colombia, asserting Colombia faces serious problems and governed by an unwell individual who likes making cocaine and selling it to the US."

Although Colombia remains the leading cocaine-producing country, authorities have found no indication linking President Gustavo Petro, who was elected in 2022, is directly connected to the trade.

A Frayed Relationship

Colombia has long been a close partner of the United States in the struggle combating drug cartels and received bipartisan support from American politicians, yet ties have deteriorated markedly after Trump assumed the presidency.

Colombia’s narcotics trade is mainly overseen by criminal organizations like the Golf Clan, the ELN guerrilla group and renegade units of the demobilized Farc, the majority of whose members demobilised after a historic peace agreement.

Colombia's Defiant Response

In response to a query whether a military operation like that in Venezuela was a possibility regarding Colombia, Trump responded: "That seems like a good idea to me personally."

The Colombian leader, a former leftist guerrilla who left armed struggle in the last century, rejected these allegations. "I am not illegitimate nor am I a narco," he declared.

"The US president speaks uninformed. Stop slandering me," he wrote in a message.

"If they [the US] bomb rural communities, they will transform into numerous insurgents in the hills. If they capture me, which many of Colombians admires and supports, they will provoke the fierce spirit of the people," the president cautioned.

From Fighter to Statesman

He passed a period in his early life as a member of the leftist M-19 guerrilla group though it is believed to have ever participated in combat. Following his disarmament, he took part in creating the nation's constitution over three decades ago and later became an influential politician. He was mayor of the capital city before winning the nation's highest office.

"I made a vow not to touch arms again ... but in defense of my country I shall resume weapons once more," he vowed.

Increased Security along with Cross-Political Opposition

The Colombian defence minister reported that Petro's protection team had received additional support.

A segment of Colombia’s conservative opposition have allied themselves with Trump, however, leaders spanning the ideological divide have rejected the threats of American military action on Colombia.

Diplomatic and Financial Sanctions

American authorities cancelled Petro’s visa following he urged US troops to disobey unlawful commands. Later, in October, it placed asset freezes against the president, his spouse and various key allies.

Simultaneously while America bolstered its military presence in the region and targeting alleged narcotics traffickers to put pressure on Venezuela’s Maduro, US forces have also conducted attacks against vessels in the eastern Pacific region off the Colombian coast.
